The Little Lost Bird

“The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are attentive to their cry.”

A few weeks ago, I hung a beautiful fern on my patio. I soon begin to hear tweets coming from the hanging basket. I saw a Mama Bird coming to feed her babies. She faithfully showed up to take care of them and would disappear among the fern leaves to be with her little ones. I never touched the fern as I did not want to disturb the nest. However, a couple days ago we had asked a pest control person to come back out to our house as he did not take down the spider webs. I decided to bump the bottom of the fern just to see if the birds were still in there. If they were, I was going to make sure they didn’t get sprayed or bothered by the pest control guy. Well….not a good idea!!! Two little birds flopped out of the nest and started running away (as they could not yet fly) I caught one right away, but the other one disappeared. 😦 I searched everywhere, but could not spot him. I was really sad that I had disturbed them and sad for the Mama bird when she returned to find her baby missing. I observed the Mama chirping as she had so many times at the nest. I then noticed she began making a different sound and realized she was calling her little one. I looked on the ground near where the basket was hanging, and there came the little lost bird!!! Not the end of the story. The little bird disappeared again! After searching again, I gave up for the time being. The pest control guy showed up. We had been a little irritated that he had overlooked all those spider webs and had to be called back. I later realized there was a purpose. We watched as he cleaned our patio and roof area. We shared with him about the little bird. As he was leaving, he happened to spot the little bird in a different area of the yard. He was hiding in some shrubs. We all joined in trying to catch the bird. With our young man helping us, we were able to catch him. He was as excited as we were!! In fact, it just broke the ice concerning the spider dilemma. Both birds were safely back in their nest.

I thought about how frightened and lost the little bird must have felt. He was used to being in a very safe place knowing his mama would be showing up through the day. He was also away from his sibling and exposed to possible predators as well as not being able to fly back to the nest. I also thought about the Mama bird and how frantic she must have been discovering her baby was gone. The sibling had to feel very alone in that nest.

Well, I begin to think about the big drama of the day. I thought about how there have been times in my journey of life when I felt like a little lost bird……unsure what to do or which way to go. I also thought how God guides and protects us just like the Mama bird was doing. The little bird was following the sound of his Mama’s voice. And…..just like the scripture verse referenced above: His eyes are always on us….and his ears are attentive to our cries. We are never lost from His sight. I did a blog recently on “God Likes Birds”, and how He even sees the little sparrow when it falls to the ground. I believe God cared about that little lost bird and also cared how we felt about it. I believe it was meant to be for the Pest Control guy to have to come back to finish his job. He’s the one that spotted the little bird. So God does like birds, but remember this verse: “So don’t be afraid. You are worth more than a whole flock of birds.” (ERV version)
